Where it beats a zip

One-handed operation is the real advantage. Someone holding a coffee, wearing gloves or carrying a child can open and close a hook and loop tote without stopping. It is also forgiving of overfilling: a zip under tension fails, whereas hook and loop simply holds less securely and tells you the bag is full.

Where it loses

Hook and loop wears out, and it collects lint. The hook side fills with fiber, thread and hair over months of use, and once it is clogged the closure stops gripping. On a cooler tote it also seals less completely than a zip, which costs you cold retention. Expect a usable life measured in a year or two of daily use rather than the life of the bag.

Cleaning it

A stiff brush or a comb run across the hook strip pulls the lint out and restores most of the grip. Worth including in any care note that goes out with a program, because most people assume a clogged closure is simply broken.

Printing near the closure

Keep artwork clear of the strip and of the flap that folds over it, since a printed area that is repeatedly pressed and peeled will wear faster than the rest of the panel.
