Eurototes and paper shopping bags are the retail end of the range: laminated paper bodies, ribbon or woven handles, and a finish that makes the bag part of the packaging rather than a giveaway. This range covers gloss and matte laminated eurototes, foil printed styles, kraft paper shopping bags and small gift sizes. These are the bags that go on a counter, into a gift set, or out of a boutique.

Eurotote or shopping bag

A eurotote is a laminated paper bag with a rigid top edge, a cardboard-reinforced base and handles threaded through reinforced eyelets. A kraft shopping bag is unlaminated paper with twisted or flat paper handles glued in. The eurotote is the premium format and reusable in practice; the kraft bag is the everyday retail carrier and fully recyclable, which the laminated one is not.

Finishes and handles

  • Gloss lamination gives saturated color and a reflective face. It shows fingerprints.
  • Matte lamination reads more expensive and hides handling marks, but knocks back bright colors slightly.
  • Foil printing adds a metallic block that no digital process can reproduce. It needs a die and carries a setup charge.
  • Handles are grosgrain ribbon, woven cord or twisted paper. Ribbon is the luxury cue; cord is more durable; paper keeps the bag fully recyclable.

Sizes and how they are quoted

Paper bag sizes are quoted width x gusset x height, and the gusset is usually generous relative to the face, because these bags are designed to hold boxed goods upright. Small gift sizes start around 5" wide, standard retail sizes sit around 8" to 10" wide, and large formats run to 16" and beyond for apparel and homewares.

What these bags will not do

A paper bag is not a rain bag and it is not a weight bag. Laminated paper survives a light drizzle and then delaminates; the base gives way under a heavy or sharp-cornered load; and paper handles pull out before the bag itself tears. If your customer is carrying bottles, tools or anything wet, a paper eurotote is the wrong choice however good it looks, and a laminated non-woven shopper is the closest substitute that keeps the retail finish.
