Match the sleeve to the machine

Laptop capacity is quoted in screen inches, but screen size and body size are not the same thing across manufacturers. A modern thin-bezel 16" machine can be narrower than an older 15". Measure the actual laptop, not the marketing size, and compare it with the sleeve dimensions on the product page. If you are buying for a mixed fleet, buy to the largest machine in it.

Padding and the drop test nobody runs

A padded sleeve protects against knocks in transit. It does not protect against a drop onto a hard floor, because almost none of these bags have a suspended base, meaning the sleeve reaches the bottom of the bag. If the tote will be set down hard on tile and concrete every day, look for a style with a reinforced or raised base, and tell recipients not to drop the bag rather than assuming the padding covers it.

Features that earn their place

• A zippered main compartment is not optional on a business tote. An open tote with a laptop in it is a theft and a rain problem.
• A trolley sleeve, the strap on the back panel that slides over a suitcase handle, is the single feature frequent travelers notice.
• An external bottle pocket keeps liquid outside the electronics compartment.
• An organizer panel with pen loops and card slots stops the bottom of the bag becoming a drawer.

Decorating a premium bag

Embroidery is the expected finish at this price level and reads as a considered gift rather than a handout. Keep the mark modest and place it low on the front panel or on the side; a large chest-height logo on a bag someone carries to client meetings reduces how often they carry it. Debossing and laser work suit the leather and synthetic-leather patches on the more expensive models.
