Non-woven polypropylene totes are the lowest cost per bag in promotional products, which is why they dominate conference registration desks, store checkouts and charity walks. The fabric is a spun polypropylene sheet rather than a woven cloth, so it can be cut and heat-sealed instead of sewn. Styles here run from flat handout totes to laminated shoppers, gusseted grocery bags and insulated versions.

GSM is the spec that matters

Non-woven fabric is measured in grams per square meter, and that number sets both the price and the feel.

  • Around 80 gsm is the economy handout. Thin, foldable, fine for a single event.
  • 100 to 120 gsm is the usual middle ground for a grocery or shopper tote that will be reused.
  • 120 gsm and up, or laminated, is the heavy end. Stiffer walls, better print surface, and the bags that survive a supermarket run with a gallon of milk in them.

Laminated or plain

A laminated non-woven bag has a printed film bonded to the outside. That gives a glossy or matte finish, full photographic coverage across the whole panel, and a wipe-clean surface that resists light rain. Plain non-woven takes screen printing, which is cheaper and faster but limits you to spot colors on a textured surface. If your artwork is a gradient, a photograph or a full-bleed pattern, laminated is the honest answer even though it costs more.

Heat-sealed seams and what they mean

Most non-woven totes are heat-sealed rather than stitched. It is fast and it makes the low price possible, but a sealed seam fails differently from a sewn one: it peels rather than frays, and it peels from the corners under load. Do not treat an economy non-woven tote as a shopping bag for heavy goods. If the bag will carry weight, move to a gusseted 120 gsm style with reinforced handles, or to cotton canvas.

Recycling, honestly

Polypropylene is recyclable as a material and many of these bags are made partly from recycled PET. That does not mean your recipient can put one in a curbside bin, because most municipal programs do not accept bagged plastics. If the sustainability story matters to the campaign, RPET content and a bag people keep for years are a stronger claim than recyclability.
