Which claim you are actually making
Three different claims get filed under one word, and they are not interchangeable:
- Recycled content means part of the fabric came from post-consumer or post-industrial waste. It is the most common claim here, quoted as a percentage.
- Natural fiber means cotton, jute or a similar plant material. It says nothing about recycled content but it does mean the bag biodegrades if it is unlined.
- Verified sourcing, such as a physical tracer in the yarn, is the only claim that can be tested in the finished product.
The word to avoid
Do not print recyclable on a promotional bag unless you can back it. A bag made from recycled material is usually not itself recyclable, because it mixes fabrics, coatings, thread and hardware, and almost no municipal program accepts bagged textiles at the curb. Recycled content and longevity are defensible claims. Recyclable and compostable are the ones that draw complaints.
What actually reduces impact
A heavy bag that someone uses for five years beats a lightweight bag handed out by the thousand, whatever the recycled percentage on either. If the program’s goal is measurable rather than symbolic, spend on durability and on a bag your recipients want to carry.
