What makes a bag work at the beach

Three things. Volume, because towels take more room than anything else. A wide opening, so the bag can be packed and unpacked without archaeology. Sand management, which means either a mesh body that lets sand fall through or a wipe-clean lining that lets it be shaken out. A structured office tote fails all three.

Mesh, canvas or coated

Mesh drains and sheds sand but holds nothing small and offers no protection. Cotton canvas looks the part and is the one people keep, but it absorbs water, stains and stays damp. Coated polyester and laminated bodies wipe clean and dry fast, at the cost of looking less natural. Pick for the behavior you want, because all three read as a beach bag in a photograph.

The thing to tell recipients

Salt water and sunscreen mark natural fabric, and sunscreen in particular stains permanently. A natural cotton beach tote will not look new after one season, and no print method survives repeated sunscreen contact unmarked. Darker colors and contrast trim hide it. If the bag is a premium gift and its appearance matters, say so in the note.

Venue rules

Pool and water park programs frequently require clear or mesh bags for the same reason stadiums do. Check the venue policy if the bags are for a specific site.
