What RPET actually is
RPET is polyester spun from recycled PET bottles. The bottles are cleaned, shredded into flake, melted and extruded into new fiber. The finished fabric behaves like virgin polyester: same strength, same water resistance, same print behavior. Recycled content is usually quoted as a percentage, and a bag described as RPET is rarely 100 percent recycled, so check the figure on the product page rather than assuming.
Recycled cotton is a different thing
Recycled cotton is spun from cutting waste and offcuts from garment production. Because the fibers have already been cut once, they are shorter, which is why recycled cotton yarn is usually blended with virgin cotton or polyester for strength. You will see small flecks of other colors in the weave. That is the recycled content showing, not a quality problem, and it is worth telling your recipients so nobody reports it as a defect.
Verified claims and what to avoid
Some lines here carry third-party verification, such as AWARE fabrics with a physical tracer that can be tested in the finished product. That is a materially stronger claim than an unverified percentage. Be careful with the word recyclable. A bag made from recycled material is not necessarily recyclable at the end of its life, and most municipal programs will not take a mixed-material tote. The defensible claims are recycled content, verified sourcing, and longevity. Claiming a bag is compostable or curbside recyclable without documentation is the kind of thing that ends up in a greenwashing complaint.
Choosing for a sustainability program
If the goal is measurable impact, a heavier bag people keep for years beats a lightweight bag handed out by the thousand, whatever its recycled percentage. If the goal is a visible claim at an event, RPET non-woven gives you the lowest cost per bag with a real recycled story.
