Reading the denier number

Denier measures yarn thickness, so a higher number means a heavier, tougher fabric.

• 210D is light and packable. Good for folding totes and lightweight sport bags.
• 300D to 420D is the everyday middle, common on zippered totes and laptop bags.
• 600D is the standard workhorse for promotional bags that need to last, and ripstop weaves add a grid of stronger yarns that stop a small tear from running.

Polycanvas is a polyester woven to imitate the look and hand of cotton canvas. It gives you the natural appearance with synthetic durability and no shrinkage, and it prints more predictably than real canvas.

Water resistant is not waterproof

This is the claim worth getting right before you promise anything to a recipient. Most polyester totes have a PU or PE coating on the inside face that sheds light rain and spills. The seams are stitched, and stitched seams let water through. A bag described as water resistant will keep a laptop dry in a shower between the car and the office; it will not keep gear dry in a downpour or on a boat deck. If you need genuinely waterproof, you want a welded tarpaulin style, and there are only a handful of those in the catalog.

Decorating synthetics

Screen printing and heat transfer both work well. Full-color transfer handles photographic artwork on a smooth coated face. Embroidery is the premium look on polycanvas and heavier denier fabric, and it is the finish that survives longest, though it adds cost and a stitch-count charge. Avoid embroidery on coated 210D, where the needle holes compromise the coating.
