What the ounce weight actually tells you
Cotton bags are sold by the weight of a square yard of fabric, and that number does more work than any other spec on the page.
- 3 to 5 oz is a lightweight giveaway tote. It folds flat, ships cheap and is the right call for a conference tote or a store handout. It will not hold a case of water.
- 6 to 10 oz is the everyday middle. Holds its shape when half empty, takes a screen print cleanly, survives regular grocery use.
- 12 to 24 oz is canvas proper. Stiff enough to stand up on its own, thick enough for a boat tote or a tool bag, and heavy enough that shipping cost becomes a real line item on a large order.
Cotton, canvas, twill and recycled
Canvas is a plain weave in a heavier yarn, which is why it feels stiffer than a cotton tote of similar weight. Twill has a visible diagonal grain and takes embroidery well. Recycled cotton is spun from pre-consumer cutting waste and usually shows small flecks of other colors in the yarn, which is part of its look rather than a defect. Organic cotton is certified at the farm, so expect a longer lead time and a higher minimum than conventional.
Printing and the one thing to plan for
Screen printing is the standard here and the cheapest way to cover a large area. Full-color and heat transfer handle photographic artwork. Embroidery works well on twill and heavier canvas but not on 3 oz cotton, where the stitches pull the weave.
Plan for shrinkage and for washing. Untreated natural cotton shrinks on the first hot wash, and a screen print on a cotton tote is not a laundry-proof finish. If you are giving these to staff who will wash them weekly, say so before you order and we will steer you to a pre-shrunk fabric and a print method that holds.
